Release Notes

The 0.1 release in October 2008 provided the basic functionality to build partial internal models. In the 0.2 release in January 2009 we focused on usability features. With the release of v0.3 the following has been realized:

• Installer
  
  A number of users have reported problems installing v0.2. Most of the time the problems occurred on corporate PCs. The installer of v0.2 compiled PillarOne on the local machine which we identified as a major source of problems since some of the directories in which temporary compile results are written are often write-protected.
  For the v0.3 release we have upgraded to a new version of the installer product and also re-designed the install process: PillarOne does not longer need to be compiled on the local machine. This makes the installation process faster and hopefully more reliable on corporate PCs.
  
  
• Bug fixes
  
  Many bugs have been fixed. They are all listed on the issue tracker which is now publicaly readable.
  
  
• Performance
  
  PillarOne based models don't have any inherent limitations other than the computer's memory and the disc space which is available to the database.
  The speed of the simulation engine has been significantly improved: 3 - 6 times faster depending on the model and the parameters.
  The way in which the simulation data is loaded into the database has been completely redesigned and is now an order of magnitude faster.
  
  The time for calculating statistical key figures on the fly was slow in v0.2. The time was largely dominated by fetching the simulation data from the database. v0.3 introduces post simulation calculations. Hence, the statistical key figures can be calculated and stored at the end of a simulation run.  this way they can be displayed instantaneously during the result analysis process.
  
  
• Charting
  
  A new chart type  - parallel coordinates - has been implemented. It can be used to visualize multi-dimensional data.
  
  Interactive zooming has been introduced.
  
  Chart titles and sometimes even axis titles are notorioulsy hard to set automatically. We introduced a properties dialogue in which one can set those manually.
  
  Chart can now export an image and the underlying data, so you can produce the charts in your favorite charting tool.
  
  
• Result analysis
  
  Next to the statistical key figures one can no also display the values of a single iteration/scenario.
  
  
• Report generation
  
  We have integrated a reporting engine (Jasper) and for one model demonstrate how one can create nicely formatted pdf reports directly out of PillarOne. This is a great way to customize results calculated with PillarOne for your clients.
  
  
• Infrastructure
  
  We have build a possibility to display context sensitive help texts. The menu item appears if you right-click on any component in the model tree structure.
  Now we have to still write the help texts ;-)
  
  The database schema has been improved to facilitate a integration into another data warehouse application.
  
  The platform now provides support for multi-period models. The parameters can be set for each period.
